Ernest Orlando Lawrence (1901 - 1958)
 


Professor ERNEST ORLANDO LAWRENCE was born of Norwegian ancestry in Canton, South Dakota (U.S.A.), August 8, 1901. In 1922 he received his A.B. degree at the University of South Dakota and the following year received his M.A. from the University of Minnesota. Professor LAWRENCE received his Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 1925. There he continued work for three more years - the first two as a National Research Fellow and the third as an Assistant Professor. In 1928 he took a position at the University of California as an Associate Professor. Since 1930 Dr. LAWRENCE has been Professor of Physics at the University of California, and in 1936 he became Director of the Radiation Laboratory as well. Professor LAWRENCE was married to Mary Kimberly Blumer in 1932. They now have three children - Eric (b. 1934), Margaret (b. 1936), and Mary (b. 1939). Professor LAWRENCE was in 1937 the recipient of the Elliott Cresson Medal of the Franklin Institute, the Research Corporation Prize, Comstock Prize of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in England.
